"The Voyageurs"
Grand Portage, Grand Marias, and the Gunflint Trail areas
are bound in the history of the voyageurs traveling from
lake to lake carrying huge loads of trade goods.
This spot was a well traveled trail. As I painted each voyageur,
I gave them fictional names;
Scotty, Frenchie, Squawks like a Raven, Samuel, One Feather and Pete.
They became real on the paper as my brush dabbed in color.
I imagined what each character was like.
The trees and evening shadows are as real as it might of been hundreds of years beforehand.
